How does my river work?

Understanding how a river works will improve the success of its restoration. This section of the wiki presents the knowledge developed in REFORM to characterize rivers and their ecosystem services.

What's wrong?

Assessing a river's condition will show if restoration is needed. REFORM researched hydromorphological and biological metrics and related those to hydromorphological pressures. This sections presents assessment methods and possible metrics that help in identifying the effect of hydromorphological pressures.

How can we improve? Identifying potential measures

Based on the basic characteristics of a river, its catchment and its condition, categories of measures can be selected. This provides an idea of the restoration potential and a catalogue of possible measures.

How can we improve? Programme of measures

After the restoration potential has been established, we can plan measures in more detail. This section assists the planning and implementation of restoration measures using a simple planning cycle. Once the measures have been implemented their effect on the river condition can be re-evaluated, thus completing the main river basin management cycle.
