Effective river restoration measures can be taken when understanding the root causes of degradation. Identifying the root causes is often difficult. Many factors may have contributed in a multi-stressor environment, whereas other alterations may have had no effect at all. This difficulty reduces the effectiveness of restoration, which is inevitable at the present state of knowledge. A project is sometimes just an intermediate step towards full successful restoration.
