Any river reach depends on the upstream and downstream reaches to which it is connected. The status of a river and the effects of pressures and measures should hence be analyzed and understood in this wider catchment context. Similarly, the upstream and downstream effects must be considered when planning a set of rehabilitation measures at various locations.
