Shorten the length of impounded reaches

Category 03. Flow dynamics improvement

General description

An impouded reach generally develops upstream of a transverse barrier (e.g. weir, dams) with numerous effects for the system. For a list of effects following this pressure please compare: http://wiki.reformrivers.eu/index.php/Impoundment). For a general description of effects due to artificial barriers please compare: http://wiki.reformrivers.eu/index.php/Artificial_barriers_downstream_from_the_site). The length of impounded reaches can be shortened by the removal of obstacles (e.g. dam removal). Therefore, we suggest to refer to the measure “Remove barrier” (http://wiki.reformrivers.eu/index.php/Remove_barrier).

Another positive effect is the establishment of longitudinal connectivity.
